343 Industries Says It Doesn’t Want Halo Infinite To Feel Like A Grind

Developers at 343 Industries have said that they don’t want the Halo Infinite Battle Pass to feel like a grind.

Halo Infinite has made headlines over the last few weeks after the developer dived deep into the way it’s free to play multiplayer will operate. The mode as a whole looks to be a proper return to form for the series – a promising modernisation of a classic.

Alongside the revelation that Halo Infinite’s multiplayer will be free to play, 343 touched on how the monetisation system will work. Seasonal Battle Passes will make up the bulk of the monetisation, but they’ll be handled differently to the likes of Call of Duty and Fortnite. Once you purchase a Battle Pass, it will never expire.

“It feels like a chore to me”

In a recent Halo Waypoint update, the live team design director, Ryan Paradis says:

“First and foremost, we’re working hard to ensure that the Battle Pass isn’t a ‘grind’ for players. We want it to be a supplemental reward stream for the time you were already putting into the game. I for one can’t stand it when I’m playing a game JUST to complete the Battle Pass – it feels like a chore to me.”

That seems like an intentional dig at games like Call of Duty and Apex Legends. Those games limit the amount of time you have to unlock seasonal content. Paradis gives an example of what it will be like for Halo Infinite players:

“If you decided to take a Season off, or you simply didn’t have time to play, that’s fine. You can always go back and purchase any prior Battle Pass as well.

343 is maintaining this player-first mentality throughout its monetisation of Halo Infinite. It’s promised that all paid content will be cosmetic only, and that any gameplay modifying unlocks will be available at free unlockable tiers.

It seems like there’ll be plenty to unlock, too. Alongside special seasonal outfits and a plethora of Spartan armour customisation, you’ll also be able to customise your suit’s AI. That opens the door for potential celebrity appearances in Halo Infinite – can you imagine Morgan Freeman narrating your every Halo match? Nor can I, but I’d love to experience it for real.
