Johnny Depp Trial Memes Could Be ‘Deeply Triggering’ For Abuse Survivors

The memes surrounding the Johnny Depp defamation trial against Amber Heard could prove to be “deeply triggering”.

This was suggested by a domestic violence charity named Refuge, which says the memes people have been making about the trial could affect survivors of abuse.

Depp is suing Amber Heard, his ex-wife, for $50 million. He’s suing over a 2018 Washington Post article in which Heard talks about domestic abuse. Depp claims his career was destroyed as a result of her defamation.

Johnny Depp Trial Memes – What’s the issue?

During the trial, social media platforms have been flooded with all kinds of memes. Many of them are making fun of Heard, or making light of the situation.

Experts are now warning that lighthearted takes on the trial could be harmful to victims of abuse. Regardless of the outcome of the trial or who’s in the right, the responses could re-traumatise survivors of domestic abuse.

Refuge CEO Ruth Davision said “the online narratives surrounding the broadcast of this trial are very troubling, with the same terrible tropes being seen and heard about survivors of abuse. It will be deeply triggering for survivors to hear and see these harmful stereotypes.”
