Horizon Forbidden West Performance And Resolution Modes Tested

Horizon Forbidden West has finally arrived and we’ve spent the last few weeks delving into what this magnificent RPG has to offer.

Forbidden West everything up a notch from its predecessor, Zero Dawn. Going all in on character driven quests and a gorgeous open world to explore, we simply didn’t want to put it down. In our full review of Forbidden West, we called it a “triumph” for Guerrilla Games – read our full thoughts here!

If you’re picking up Horizon Forbidden West, you should know that there are two different ways that you can play. Like most PS5 games these days, you can choose to either favour resolution or frame rate. Running in resolution mode will see a native 4K resolution and 30fps target displayed on the PS5. Meanwhile, running in performance mode sees a reduced resolution in favour of a target 60fps.

Should you play in Resolution or Performance mode?

We found that playing in performance mode was certainly the way to go for an action game like Forbidden West. The smoother frame rate made aiming at specific targets much easier, making combat flow seamlessly. However, resolution mode might be preferential if you’re taking lots of images in the photo mode.

Want to decide which mode is best for yourself? We’ve got you covered. Watch the handy video below to see a comparison between the two rendering modes.
