Guillermo del Toro says “F**K Konami” for the most epic reason ever

There’s no shortage of bad blood between film director Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) and Konami.

Del Toro was working alongside Hideo Kojima (the visionary behind the Metal Gear series) on a game called Silent Hills, before it was cancelled by Konami, which left a bitter taste in his mouth. Kojima and del Toro working together on a survival horror game in the Silent Hill series would have been incredible, and the initial Playable Teaser garnered a great reception.

Due to conflicts between Kojima and Konami surrounding the Metal Gear series, Kojima ended up parting ways with them after many years of working together. Silent Hills was cancelled, and Guillero was understandably disappointed to have been caught in the middle of that, and to not see his game come to fruition after putting a lot of work into planning it.

Guillermo del Toro went on a bit of a Twitter spree praising his pal Kojima and his latest project, Death Stranding, which made its world premiere at The Game Awards. He showed his praise in the form of dissing Konami and saying what a lot of people have been thinking lately.

If Death Stranding is well-received and a commercial success for Kojima Productions, perhaps that will open doors for the two to collaborate once again, and to take care of some unfinished business. It wouldn’t be under the Silent Hill banner, but that’s okay. Guillermo has previously expressed interest in working with Kojima again, so it’s likely just a matter of time:

“I love working with Kojima-san. We are still in touch. We are still friends and working into doing something together, but that’s not going to be [Silent Hills].” says del Toro in an interview with IGN.

We don’t know a ton about Death Stranding yet, other than it’s developed by Kojima Productions, directed by Hideo himself, will be published by Sony on PS4, and features Norman Reedus from the Walking Dead as the main protagonist, and Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen is also involved. It’s an open-world game which deals with the connections between life and death.

There hasn’t been a release date announced yet, but Kojima has revealed that Death Stranding will come out prior to the year that the movie Akira took place, which was 2019.
