Back 4 Blood Ditches Red As It Goes Gold

Zombie shoot-em-up Back 4 Blood is currently in open beta, but the development team was ecstatic to announce the game had gone gold.

Turtle Rock Studios are returning to the zombie genre with their Left 4 Dead spiritual successor, Back 4 Blood. The game is just a couple of months away from launch, but the team took to Twitter to reveal the game was ready for release day.

The news comes as players will be getting their hands on an open beta, which you can take part in. While many are interested in the return of a co-op zombie shooter, Back 4 Blood’s closed beta resulted in some mixed reactions.

Swapping Red For Gold

With Back 4 Blood going gold, it means the game is in a state that Turtle Rock considers ready for launch. With a couple of months of leeway, the developer will undoubtedly be working away to smooth the game out as much as they can in patches.

Despite the middling reception from some, I think Back 4 Blood will be a relative success. Especially considering that it will be available for free to Xbox Game Pass subscribers. With a campaign, a controversial versus mode, and built-in replayability, there is a lot of fun for players to have with their friends. And Game Pass ensures that players will have friends to play with.

However, much of its success will lie in how Turtle Rock manage post-launch support. Turtle Rock suffered a disaster with the launch of Evolve. I actually liked the game, and it had the hallmarks of some popular asymmetrical multiplayer games today. But with a controversial DLC model and stumbling post-launch support, Evolve was dead in the water after just one year.

In a recent interview with our sister site GameByte however, Lead Game Designer Brandon Yanez claimed that the developer had “learned a lot from Evolve” and hopes not to repeat the same mistakes.

So, hopefully we have a fun and long-lasting co-op shooters on our hands when Back 4 Blood launches on October 12th. Back 4 Blood launches on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
