After weeks of teasing, DICE has finally revealed Battlefield 2042 to the world.
Set 21 years in the future, the game returns to a semi-futuristic setting in a similar fashion to Battlefield 4. A worldwide resource shortage drags the world into an all-out war. The situation introduces specialist soliders, known as ‘No-Pats’ [Non Patriated] who aren’t fighting for a certain flag, but for a better world.
Battlefield 2042 forgoes single-player and will be a completely multiplayer title. There aren’t any plans to add a BR [Battle Royale] mode yet, either. The classic Conquest and Breakthrough modes will return featuring a franchise first 128-players.
Only in Battlefield
The extensive five-minute trailer showcases a myriad of locations, all of which seem to take the franchise on a globe-trotting trip. There’re snowy mountain peaks, serene-looking cityscapes of South Korea and some desolate desert in Qatar to top it all off.
Plenty of semi-futuristic tech seems to be on show. Notably, there’s a robotic dog that is straight out of Boston Dynamics. There are also armed hover vehicles seen speeding across the ice. Wingsuits can also be seen several times throughout the trailer.
Vehicles will obviously play a huge role in the new title. Your standard Tanks, Attack Helicopters and Jets take centre stage in the action.
Battlefield 2042 looks to see ‘Levolution’ return, the mechanic that sees maps evolve as matches progress. In one map, a rocket initiates a blast off launch sequence. Another map sees a huge tornado ravage the area, tearing vehicles and soldiers from the ground.
Perhaps the best aspect of the reveal is that DICE seems to have gone back to the roots of Battlefield – particularly with those ‘Only in Battlefield’ moments. At one point, an ATV rams straight into a Helicopter right from the top of a skyscraper. Elsewhere, a pilot performs a ridiculous Jet swap kill on an approaching enemy. After the super-serious Battlefield 1 and V, it’s refreshing to see.
Long time coming
The road to this reveal trailer has been long with several supposed leaks and rumours along the way. A video that was suspected to be an internal trailer leaked in full a couple of weeks ago. It turns out that the leak was only intended for internal viewing as the reveal trailer released today was far longer and completely different.
We don’t have to wait much longer to see full gameplay, either. DICE are teasing a full gameplay reveal on 13th June, which is this Sunday. It’ll likely be at the Microsoft E3 press conference. Battlefield 2042 is scheduled to release on October 22nd for current and new-gen consoles, as well as PC.
Until then, why not satiate your Battlefield 2042 craving with some Battlefield 4? It’s currently free to download on PC for Amazon Prime members.
