Twitch Streamer Loses Work Because Of ‘Squid Game’

A popular Twitch streamer has been losing work as a result of her username being the same as the popular Netflix show Squid Game.

Squid Game was released in September 2021, and it’s currently the talk of the internet. We’ve seen everything from knock-off video games to Squid Game cryptocurrency scams suddenly appearing.

The popularity of Squid Game is unrivaled on the internet right now, but that’s causing problems for the streamer who goes by the same name.

Lydia Ellery has been using the name “SquidGame” for many years. She has over 40,000 followers on Twitch and she’s a member of Yogscast. She says to her “it was just a silly name I thought up on the spot“, but now it’s causing her to lose out on work.

Lydia says she has “lost 2 amazing presenting opportunities” due to her handle, as well as being sent abuse online.

Recently, she was also banned on Instagram due to having the same name as the show. She managed to get her account back, but the trouble hasn’t stopped there. She now says she might have to change her handle, and it’s easy to see why.

Nobody should be sent abuse or lose opportunities for something out of your control like this. It’s sad to see what Lydia has had to deal with, but hopefully she can find a way to keep her handle going forwards.

Perhaps when the popularity of the show goes down – though that doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon.
