Steam’s Chinese Audience Now Totals Over 30 Million Gamers

Steam’s presence and fanbase in China has grown massively over the last few months, and it’s now being reported that there are more than 30 million Steam users in China alone.

Daniel Ahmad, analyst at Niko Partners, tweeted the news stating: “Steam has more than 30m users in China.

“It initially gained popularity due to DOTA 2, but has grown due to more localised games, regional pricing, local payment methods + wide variety of games banned/blocked in China. Perfect World/Valve are creating a China only ver. of Steam.”

Ahmad went on to tweet about the popularity of indie games in the country, especially titles that are only available in Chinese, saying: “Chinese indie developers have been able to find success on Steam. Not just overseas but domestically as well due to 30m domestic users. The Scroll of Taiwu, a Chinese indie Wuxia game, has sold over 600,000 paid units on Steam. The game is only available in Simplified Chinese.”
