Sony has acquired the developer of Destiny and the original Halo games, Bungie, for $3.6 billion.
This is the second huge acquisition of the month as the games industry shifts in a big way. Earlier this month, Microsoft acquired Activision for a whopping $68.9 billion. Now, it’s Sony’s turn to make a big move.
Bungie is the developer of the hugely popular MMO, Destiny. It was previously responsible for developing the original Xbox games for the Xbox. After ten years under Activision, the studio went independent to focus on developing Destiny 2. Now, it’s joining the PlayStation family.
Sony buys Bungie
Jim Ryan starts a post on the official PlayStation Blog, “First off, I want to be very clear to the community that Bungie will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher.
“As such, we believe it makes sense for it to sit alongside the PlayStation Studios organization, and we are incredibly excited about the opportunities for synergies and collaboration between these two world-class groups.”
A tweet from Bungie reads: “Bungie has limitless potential to unite friends around the world. We have found a partner in PlayStation that shares our dream and is committed to accelerating our creative vision of building generation-spanning entertainment. Our journey begins today.“
From the sounds of it, Destiny 2 will remain supported on the platforms that it’s already on. That’s great news for those that play on Xbox and PC! Hopefully, this acquisition by Sony means that the studio can become more ambitious with its game projects.
