Until now, Warzone players have had to settle for playing the last-gen version of the game on their shiny new next-gen consoles. That might be about to change, as it looks as though a next-gen upgrade of the game could be on the horizon. Or at the very least coming to PS5!
Users on Twitter have unearthed a photo of the PlayStation store which appears to list one of several high-resolution texture packs for 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
The description reads:
“This pack supports the most detailed textures for weapons and Operators in Modern Warfare and Warzone.
Recommended only for PS4 Pro and PS5 players with high-resolution displays.”
The image shows a download titled “Pack 4”, with the description indicating that installing it will only affect the weapon and character models. It may be that players are required to download several texture packs if they wish for Warzone to look its best.
What features would a next-gen Warzone have?
A next-gen version of Warzone is something that the developers at Raven Software seem to be definitely working on [via CharlieIntel]. The team have previously confirmed that the upgraded version will support the faster loading times of the consoles’ SSD as well as a framerate of 120hz.
As a cross-gen title, Black Ops – Cold War already supports these features on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The DualSense controller also takes advantage of Cold War, with the adaptive triggers feeling distinctly unique depending on which weapons are fired. That’s a feature that we’d love to see move across to Warzone.
Raven has also mentioned that they’re exploring the possibility of adding a FOV [field of view] slider to the console versions of Warzone. That means console players will be able to choose how much of their surroundings they wish to see at one time.
Features like an FOV slider, high frame rate and Ultra HD texture packs are creature comforts that the PC community have enjoyed since Warzone launched last year. The capabilities of the new consoles should bring the Warzone experience closer to that of the PC.
There’s no official word yet on when the next-gen upgrade will arrive. With Season 3 of Warzone kicking off with a nuclear-sized bang, we certainly hope it’s soon!
