Imane “Pokimane” Anys has criticised viewers on Twitch for their “sexist” double standard regarding female streamers.
Pokimane has been unfortunately subject to harassment and abuse from viewers in her streams. Recently, she spoke out about what she perceives as sexism in the way people react to female streamers.
“Why is it that people like to hold how attractive someone is against them,” she said. “People would be like, your viewers only like the way they look, and they want to f**k you. For starters, that’s rude and gross. Nobody asked.”
But she continued, saying, “Even if people do find a female streamer attractive, what’s the issue? What’s wrong with finding someone hot?”
She argued that male streamers have fans who find them attractive, but that they don’t get negativity for it. “Why is that used as a means to discredit female streamers’ work? That is what I don’t understand.”
It is definitely a shame that female streamers are subjected to more abuse for their appearance. Anyone who has spent 5 minutes looking at a woman’s stream chat will typically see gross comments about their appearance. Even smaller streamers are harassed, with some being turned off from the platform by it.
However, as one of Twitch’s most popular streamers, Pokimane receives more of these comments than most others. It’s easy to see why she wanted to speak out about the sexism she sees online.
