Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer has spoken about the studio’s position on Johnny Depp’s possible return as Captain Jack Sparrow.
The information was revealed in an interview with The Times, where Bruckheimer confirmed two Pirates of the Caribbean films were in development at Disney.
When he was asked if either of these Pirates movies involved the return of Johnny Depp, Bruckheimer responded with: “Not at this point, but the future is yet to be decided.“
Bruckheimer also confirmed that one of these new Pirates movies would star Margot Robbie in the lead role. Rumours about this stretch as far back as two years ago.
Of course, there’s still the very real possibility that Depp would not come back to the role. The actor himself confirmed that during the $50 million defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard last month.
Fans, however, remain hopeful that Depp could don the legendary leather hat, silk tweed coat and red bandana for one last adventure. There are currently two petitions running that lobby for the actor’s return to the franchise.
The Pirates of the Caribbean series is one of Disney’s most successful franchises. Each movie has earned over $650 million worldwide. The last film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, earned $794 million at the Box Office yet has a 30% “rotten” rating on RottenTomatoes.
