FIFA 22 Might Change Its Name In Future Entries

FIFA 22 might change its name after the series had a record breaking launch, reaching over 9.1 million players in a week.

FIFA 22 launched last week after allowing EA Play members to access up to 10 hours the week before. It seems like players are really resonating with the latest in the yearly franchise. EA released a statement this week claiming that FIFA 22 had a record-breaking launch.

Amidst the likely celebration, EA also revealed that FIFA 22 might change its name in future entries. While the franchise is as successful as ever, can the series survive a monumental brand change?

FIFA 22’s record breaking launch is a the polar opposite of another football sim that launched recently. eFootball launched to the worst reviews in steam history. However, as if this wasn’t enough of a blow, it was also ridiculed for its utterly hilarious facial animations.

On the other hand, EA’s football game reached 9.1 million players, created over 7.6 million Ultimate Team squads, and played over 460 million matches. That’s a lot of football! EA is doubling down on authenticity which it says is ‘essential to the experience’. It continued by stating:

‘That’s why we focus so much energy on the collective strength of over 300 individual licensed partners that give us access to 17,000+ athletes across 700+ teams, in 100 stadiums and over 30 leagues around the world.’

Regarding the name change, however, EA claimed it was ‘exploring the idea of renaming [its] global EA Sports football games’. This essentially means that it will be reviewing its ongoing relationship with FIFA to potentially branch out on its own. I’d imagine that, after over 20 years, EA have established relationships with the appropriate parties to maintain the rights to team names and players. I wonder what the new name could be? Sorry to tell you FIFA, but eFootball is already taken.
