DICE is removing 128 player Breakthrough matches in Battlefield 2042 to create a more “tactical” experience.
The Breakthrough mode, which used to have 128 players per match, has been reduced to just 64 players. This comes in the newest patch, Update 4.1.
A new post on the Battlefield website reads “All-Out Warfare playlists have been updated with new setups, removing Breakthrough 128 from the list of options on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC only.”

DICE explained that the “value and impact of an individual player, and squad, is reduced due to the increased intensity and chaos of the combat.” It stated that 128 player modes were better suited to Conquest, due to the bigger size which fits the sandbox style of gameplay better.
It hopes that the 64 player version of Breakthrough will provide a more tactical experience for players. DICE expects players will be able to “hold frontlines more effectively” and “find more space to work together and fulfil their individual roles.”
Breakthrough 128 Is Now 64 – Rebalancing
That’s not all that’s being changed in Update 4.1, though. Other key changes include weapon rebalancing and changes to stock weapons. You can check out all the details in the patch notes, as there are lots of minor changes to guns, specialists and vehicles.

DICE has reduced the overall power of Boris’ SG-36 Sentry Gun. It has also updated Angel so that he no longer provides Armor Plates with his Supply Bag. Stock weapons will apparently handle better with improved base recoil, and they’ve slightly reduced the recoil benefits provided by weapon attachments.
The update is out today, May 19th. The team has promised the next big update is set for release in early June. That update includes the launch of Season 1.
We should expect to see more information and a full overview of the June update soon. Until then, players will have to make do with Update 4.1.
