Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer Breakdown
The trailer opens with Obi-Wan Kenobi wandering the sands of Tattooine. “The fight is done, we lost”, words that echo the catastrophic loss for not just Obi-Wan, but the Jedi and the Republic too. This may be a flashback statement from the beacon sent out to all Jedi by Obi-Wan to not return to Coruscant after the execution of Order 66, but we doubt it.
It looks like Kenobi is in the same area as the Lars moisture farm where a ten-year-old Luke Skywalker lives. It’s also the same location we see Luke at the beginning of Episode IV: A New Hope. There’s some brilliant attention to detail here, instantly linking the end of Revenge of the Sith with Obi-Wan Kenobi thanks to the Eope mount Obi-Wan rode to give Luke over to Owen and Beru Lars.
The next scene sees a young Luke Skywalker pretending to podrace above the doorway of the Lars estate. This again highlights the massive loss Obi-Wan Kenobi experienced in seeing Anakin Skywalker fall to the dark side on Mustafar, who was (as we all know) an excellent pod racer pilot from a very young age.
As the iconic Dual of Fates theme kicks in from the Phantom Menance, we can already see that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series is going to be a tale of the Jedi Master struggling to adapt to isolation and his own demons. This moment is also a window into the day-to-day of Obi-Wan, guarding Luke from afar and against the wishes of Owen Lars.
We also know that the limited series will see Obi-Wan go off-world on other missions, presumably in aid of the rebellion. This means that another Jedi or a qualified member of the Rebellion may take Obi-Wan’s place in guarding Luke at times. We know Dave Filloni and Jon Favreau aren’t afraid of crossing characters over. Could we see Ashoka Tano return in Obi-Wan Kenobi?
The Grand Inquisitor – Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer Breakdown
We’ve covered the rather extreme life and times of The Grand Inquisitor here for readers to enjoy for some background. He is also the subject of the next scene in our Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer breakdown.
Whilst actor Rupert Friend will most likely deliver a brilliant performance, it’s strange seeing The Grand Inquisitor with correct human proportions. In Star Wars Rebels and various comics, he has the trademark elongated head of a Pau’an and trademark golden Sith eyes. Neither of these features is present in this Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer breakdown. However, his face tattoos and armour look spot on.
The Grand Inquisitor speaks of being patient whilst hunting Jedi, setting up the antagonist connection to Obi-Wan Kenobi early on in the series. Trained by Darth Vader, we know the big bad himself will reveal himself in the series in the last three episodes. Darth Vader has been known to take on hunting down Obi-Wan personally due to high-ground related reasons.
The next scene shows Fortress Inquisitorius as seen in the game Jedi: Fallen Order, which players will know is a mostly underwater base. Their original base was in the Coroscaunt Industrial District as seen in Episode One.
A Lambda-class shuttle is also spotted docking at the fortress, which is especially noteworthy as only high-ranking Imperial officials used them in most cases. Whilst Grand Moff Tarkin being involved with Jedi hunting is a bit far-fetched, we can almost guarantee this being a Darth Vader or Emperor Palpatine easter egg. Let’s hope it pays off – Darth Vader only cares about finding Obi-Wan Kenobi and trying to resurrect Padmé at this point in time, after all.
The Fifth Brother seems to be The Grand Inquisitors’ right-hand man at this point, being present in an interrogation scene on Tatooine and in the underwater control room of Fortress Inquisitorius.
Reva – Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer Breakdown
A new Inquisitor, oddly named ‘Reva’ instead of being given a ‘Sister number’ title, is featured heavily throughout the second half of the trailer. She could possibly have a significant role alongside Darth Vader, although this isn’t confirmed.
Obi-Wan Kenobi’s presence on Tatooine is obviously known by Reva in the trailer, which cuts between Obi-Wan using public transport across the sands whilst the new Inquisitor is hanging civilians. It looks like she’s looking for information, and he’s hunting Obi-Wan down off-world too.
The next scene features Daiyu, a new planet introduced in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. It’s described by showrunner and writer Joby Harold as having a ‘Hong-Kong feel to it’. It’s graffiti and overuse of neon lighting is a far cry from Tatooine and should hopefully keep things visually interesting for sure.
It looks like Obi-Wan is cloaked and looking for help, he certainly doesn’t want anyone knowing he is a Jedi at this point thanks to the use of a blaster of all things. It looks like he took the fight with General Grevious to heart. Get it?
There’s a short montage of Stormtroopers, The Grand Inquisitor, The Fifth Brother, and Reva gathering people together and outright threatening them for information. Whilst there’s not much to read into this, it’s clear that Obi-Wan Kenobi simply didn’t go into hiding for nearly 20 years without any trouble.
Our Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer breakdown ends with him looking down with the expression of sadness and fear alongside Darth Vaders breathing and the Mustafar theme creeping into the score. This ties up the trailer nicely making sure fans know what’s about to go down.
