Mortal Kombat Movie Sequel Officially Coming With Marvel Writer Onboard

New Line is returning to work on a sequel to the Mortal Kombat movie, based on the popular fighting-game franchise.

Mortal Kombat was released in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021. That film is now getting a sequel, and Jeremy Slater has been hired to write it. Slater is head writer on the Disney+ series Moon Knight, which comes out soon.

Not many details about this sequel have been revealed, but it’s safe to assume it’ll expand on the first with more characters and plenty of action. Popular characters missing from the first are probably going to be make an appearance, but there’s no confirmation yet.

Mortal Kombat Movies

Mortal Kombat 2021 was directed by Simon McQuoid and opened at number one at the box office. It was based on the classic fighting franchise, known for its brutal fatalities and memorable character designs. The film focused on Cole Young, a mixed martial arts fighter being hunted by Sub-Zero.

It wasn’t the first Mortal Kombat movie – multiple films were released in the 90s, including Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. But the 2021 version reimagined the Mortal Kombat universe on film for a more modern audience. There have also been various animated Mortal Kombat films.

We’ll probably hear more about the new sequel this year, but it’s safe to say it won’t be out for a bit.
