15) Thor: Love and Thunder

With Taika Waititi back in the Thor director’s chair after bringing us the incredible Thor: Ragnarok, we were expecting more of what we loved before in the God of Thunder’s fourth film. Mostly, that was what we got. The return of not only Chris Hemsworth, but Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster as The Mighty Thor made for some great chemistry, comedy, and action sequences – all mixing in that signature blend only Taika is know for.

Why isn’t Thor: Love and Thunder ranked higher? Well, unlike, Ragnarok – which struck a fine balance in having fun with the Thor premise whilst still being true to the character – Love and Thunder went too in the direction of the former than the latter. In many places, it feels more like a parody than a genuine Thor film. Love and Thunder is also really noticeable in a lack of key supporting players which had been killed off or sent elsewhere in Ragnarok; Loki, Odin, Hulk, Jeff Goldblum’s The GrandMaster etc; with those who took their place like Christian Bale’s Gorr or Russell Crowe’s Zeus being unable to fill the void anywhere near as well.

14) Spider-Man: Homecoming

Without needing to retread Peter Parker’s origin story, Homecoming is a balanced first solo venture for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Complimented by the supporting Robert Downey Jr and Michael Keaton as the villain. Homecoming is definitely not short on decent performances which bolster a unique, though sometimes uneven, tale of power and responsibility.

13) Marvel’s The Avengers

The vastly evolved Marvel films that followed have made the impact of the original team-up drop by comparison. Nevertheless, the original Avengers movie is still great to watch thanks to the charisma of its cast throughout.

12) Black Panther

Black Panther is rich both in its cast and its story touching on race, culture, and heritage. Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger is a wonderful antithesis to Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa – showing that becoming a villain can be just be the consequence of one wrong decision.

11) Ant-Man

Taking a new genre direction for the MCU, Ant-mMn sets itself apart as a light-hearted comedy heist film. Edgar Wright stepped away as director during production, but the contributions from the Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead director still shows in its witty writing.

10) Guardians of the Galaxy

While Avengers had five solo films leading up to it, Guardians of the Galaxy is a team-up movie that makes for an even better time to this day, even if you’ve never heard the word “Marvel” before. It’s a feel-good action-adventure comedy about lost souls coming together, laced with an audibly delicious soundtrack. Its villain is not that memorable, but James Gunn truly made a name for himself amongst fans with his first MCU film

9) Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Whereas Eternals lost fans whilst trying to do something new, director Sam Raimi showed with Doctor Strange 2 how to do just that while retaining audiences. It’s what feels like the MCU’s first and long overdue horror film, at the same time offering exciting and surprising new insights into the multiverse concept.

8) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians 2 excels the already heartfelt original with a more personal plot – topped off with Kurt Russel as a much improved villain over the first’s Ronon. The icing on the cake is that it still doesn’t compromise on its comedy and drama.

7) Thor: Ragnarok

Even though it’s the third over 7 years, Ragnarok feels like the first true Thor film looking back. Director Taika Waititi went back to the storyboard, took all of its Norse mythology source material and just having fun with it all. It was at this point that both Thor and Hulk started the become the comedic darlings of the MCU.
