Learning how to remove duplicates in Excel will come in handy for day to day use. When using Microsoft Excel, you might want to have duplicated data in your document. Other times, you might find that it makes your data too hard to understand.

If you are looking to figure out how to remove duplicates in Excel, you will be using conditional formatting to fight and highlight any duplicates. That way, you can remove them if you need to.

  • Step 1: Select all of the cells you want to check for duplicates.
  • Step 2: On the toolbar select Home and then Conditional Formatting, then Highlight Cells Rules, then Duplicate Values. All of these should be easy to find.
  • Step 3: You need to select the formatting you want to apply to the duplicate values in the box next to Values With, and then click OK. This will then highlight any duplicates you have in the colour or way you have selected so they can be easily identified.  Now, you will want to remove these duplicate values.
  • Step 4: Select Data from the toolbar, then Remove Duplicates. Under Columns, check or uncheck the columns that you want to remove duplicates from so they are selected. 
  • Step 5: Select Ok

Then, all of your duplicates in Excel should be removed. These are permanently deleted, you cannot just click undo to make them come back, so ensure you want to delete the duplicates there. It is also worth noting it will only remove exact duplicates in the document.
