Gilbert Gottfried, Iago In Aladdin, Has Died Aged 67

The comedian Gilbert Gottfried, who portrayed Iago in Aladdin as well as many other wonderful roles, has sadly passed away at the age of 67.

When it comes to comedians with iconic voices it’s hard not to think of Gottfried. His unique voice helped him stand out in a way that was always instantly recognisable. He played everyone’s favourite bad parrot turned good Iago in Aladdin. Not just in the first film but in its sequels, TV show and even video games including Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II.

Gilbert Gottfried’s Twitter account broke the sad news earlier with an image post.

The post reads: We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor. Love, the Gottfried family.

More Than Iago

Although most will know Gilbert Gottfried the most as Iago in Aladdin you will no doubt have heard him or seen him in many other things. Over the course of his career he appeared on Saturday Night Live, was Kraang Subprime in Teenage Mutant Mutant Turtles and was Mister Mxyzptlk in Superman: The Animated Series, LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham and more.

Those were just a few of his roles though and there’s no denying that one of the main things he was known for was his comedy. Doing comedy from a young age Gilbert was known for crass humour and rude jokes. Something that made his success in children’s entertainment all the more amusing. It also goes to show the range he could appeal to. Young or old it’s unlikely that you haven’t heard the iconic voice of Gilbert Gottfried at least once.

His memory will no doubt live on for years to come. Our thoughts are with his family. May he rest in peace.
