Activision In Lawsuit Over Online Multiplayer Patent Infringement

Worlds Inc. is suing Activision Blizzard over supposed online multiplayer patent infringements. “Fair compensation” is being claimed over the means of online player-to-player interaction in games such as World of Warcraft and Call of Duty.

What Worlds Inc. claims to have been violated by Activision Blizzard is “a system and method for enabling users to interact in a virtual space.”

When you hear these kinds of stories, the immediate reaction is to laugh it off as an opportunistic shot in the dark. However, in 2012, Worlds Inc. won the settlement in 2010 with similar patent claims against NCSoft over MMO City of Heroes.

“Technologies created by Worlds have helped the businesses of virtual worlds gaming and the sale of virtual goods to grow into a multi-billion dollar industry,” said Worlds CEO Thom Kidrin. “While we are pleased to see that the gaming industry and its rapidly growing customer base have enthusiastically embraced our patented technologies, we deserve fair compensation for their use.”

Activision has yet to respond to the lawsuit.
