PS4’s ‘play while you download’ secrets revealed

Sony has been tight lipped about revealing the details of PS4’s ‘play while you download’ feature. However, Guerilla Games has spilled some secrets which were behind closed doors till now.

Killzone: Shadow Fall from Guerilla will be one of the first games to use the aforementioned feature. As revealed by Technical Director Michiel van der Leeuw, the way it will work is that you will be able to download a “chunk” of the game which will then render it playable. As the player plays the game, the remaining parts of the game will continue getting downloaded in the background which will also be divisible in “chunks”.

It has yet not been revealed how big these “chunks” will be, but gamers with slow connections may find themselves playing the waiting game.

Also such an option will be rendered obsolete in games like GTA which requires the entire map to be available from the beginning. Only linear games which progress level by level will be able to use this feature.

The new feature will enable gamers to try new games from the moment they are released. Of course, digital downloads will nullify the download times associated with the “chunk” system. How much this system gets popular, only time will tell.

What do you think? Will you opt for it? Do let us know.
