Game of Thrones is all about the special guest stars lately, from the Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard to UFC champ Conor McGregor.
To add on to the list of people that aren’t actors but are getting roles in Game of Thones in the name of publicity, singer Ed Sheeran is going to be making an appearance as well.
This seems like the type of thing we see on a cheesy sitcom during sweeps, not on a deep fantasy show where immersion is key to the enjoyment. There’s a lot of fantasy stuff going on and you’ve got to suspend your disbelief and remember this takes place in a different world, but when you’ve got Ed Sheeran popping in to sing a little ditty, it just takes you out of it.
It hasn’t been revealed exactly which role Ed is going to play, or how big of a part he’ll have.
If Game of Thrones starts feeling cheesy and taking you out of it with recognizable guests, that’s not a great look. The show is a massive success, and it won’t last forever, so if they decide to boost ratings with celebrity gimmicks as they ride off into the sunset, that’s their call…
GoT creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, revealed these casting choices at a SXSW panel, and why they chose Ed.
“For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it,” David Benioff said.
What do you think about celebrities making cameos in Game of Thrones? Does it take you out of the incredible world they’ve created, or do you like seeing a familiar face popping up?
