Old Guy Who Tells Joker “We’re Not Intimidated By Thugs” in Dark Knight Actually Real US Politician


Patrick Leahy has been serving as a Senator in the state of Vermont since 1975, and has won 7 elections to obtain then hold onto his seat. Out of every Senator, Leahy has the most seniority. He’s no joke when it comes to Senatoring. He’s also a huge Batman fan. Senator Leahy went from being a fan to actually being a part of the Batman universe in 1992 when he wrote the forward for The Dark Knight Archives: Volume 1.

Leahy took things to the next level with an uncredited cameo in Batman Forever. He’s also voiced a character in the animated series.

Patrick Leahy’s biggest cameo in a Batman project was his role in The Dark Knight, where he shared screen time with Health Ledger’s famed portrayal of The Joker, and uttered the line:

“We’re not intimated by thugs.”

To which The Joker responded:

 “You know, you remind me of my father. I hated my father.”

All of the royalties and fees that Patrick Leahy earned from his participation in various Batman projects and movies over the years have all been donated to the Kellogg-Hubbard library. Why this library in particular? It’s because this is where Leahy went to read comic books as a child.

By helping out the library, he can help introduce future generations of kids to his love of comic books and Batman.

To date, he has contributed to 9 different Batman works. In 1997’s Batman & Robin, he played himself, meaning that not only has he appeared as numerous characters in the Batman world, but that he, himself, is even a part of canon. Most recently, he played Senator Purrington in Batman vs. Superman.
