Everyone cannot be a winner and that applies for video games too. There has been a lot such instances where an unexpected game end up being the most successful one. On the contrary, we have also seen a lot of games from famous franchises and studios not being able to live up to their expectations.

Today, we take a look at a few video game franchises which we thought would be great hits but things turned out otherwise. We have tried to point out the lowest points in such games in this feature.

1. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is definitely the most successful skating video game franchise. The first four installments of the series were massive successes.

Unique gameplay and varied soundtracks made the initial installments of the series great games. Pro Skater 2 and Pro Skater 3 are critically ranked among PlayStation and PlayStation 2’s best ever games.

Nearly thirteen years after the release of Pro Skater 4, Activision released Pro Skater 5 in 2015. The studio promised that the game would be a streamlined skating game during its announcement.

The fans too had a lot expectation from the game as the Pro Skater series was being brought back again after a long hiatus. However, the studio failed to deliver on that promise and hence the game was unable to live up to the expectations.

Hopefully we’ll see another good Tony Hawk’s game soon.

2. Call of Duty: Ghosts

The Call of Duty series shot to fame with the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007. The previous installments of the game were good but not of this level. Since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the series has seen a number of games from Black Ops to Advanced Warfare and all of them followed an upward curve in terms of success.

The only game in the series that didn’t really achieve similar success was Ghosts. The game, released in 2013, is monotonous and boring. The campaign is dull and the gameplay is not up to the mark when compared to the other games of the series. Activision, however got the series back on track after this game with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

3. Batman: Arkham Origins

Batman: Arkham Asylum was an amazing game with nice puzzles, interesting characters and great combat mechanisms. The game, developed by Eidos Entertainment didn’t have a great build up as licensed games have a small chance of being a success. But Batman: Arkham Asylum, against all odds, went on to be a hit after its release in 2009.

In 2012, publishers Warner Bros. changed the developers for their new game Batman: Arkham Origins. The game, which was made as a prequel to the earlier installment failed to deliver to the expectations. There was merely anything new added to the game, which made the game less interesting.

The game couldn’t really improve upon what its predecessor had already achieved and it made the fans disappointed.

4. Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil series is a horror, adventure and action video game series published by Capcom. The series has already released nine games with Resident Evil 6 being the last one. Resident Evil 4 is considered by many to be the best game of the series but some fans thought it had ‘too much’ action.

The following installment, Resident Evil 5 was released in 2009 with a further increase in action which many of the fans didn’t like as it was supposed to be a dramatic horror game.

Finally, the latest installment of the series till date, Resident Evil 6 turned up in 2012. The game transformed into a full action game, which was disheartening for many fans. The game was not widely accepted as many thought the series had lost its charm. The game was released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms.

However, Capcom will re-release Resident Evil 6 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with all DLC on March 29 and perhaps a brand new game announcement will follow suit soon.

Final Fantasy XIII was released in 2010 and the game had a good reception. The first sequel of the game, Final Fantasy XIII – 2  released in 2011 was also accepted somewhat by the fans, but the second sequel really took a turn for the worse.

The second sequel aka Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was released in 2014 and has had poor reception. The poor story of the game is one of the reasons for the game’s failure. Although the game has a good combat system, there are irritating little tasks or quests which makes it dull.

Generally the Final Fantasy games are excellent so there were a lot of expectations from this outing too, but Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII failed miserably.

Hoping to see another excellent Final Fantasy game soon.

We couldn’t publish this list without including the gaming world’s most recent trainwreck. The game was meant to be an explorer’s paradise featuring an artificially intelligent procedurally generated universe, but the developer didn’t live up to it’s promises. After an early sales explosion, the lackluster gameplay was revealed, and sales dropped off so precipitously that many people requested refunds and claimed the game was a scam.
