This is an era of internet. We are surrounded by high speed connections and can access any information we need with just a click of a button.
The internet’s biggest blessing called Google has it all. Google has answers to almost every question you ask. However, in order to find better results, you need to know how to search in Google.
Here are some of the effective methods of searching for information in Google.
1. Search for either this or that
There are instances when we are not actually sure what term we should use for searching particular information in Google. During such instances, we should use some potential variation of words and separate them by ‘or’. Using this technique will yield the results for the word which makes most sense.
2. How to search using synonyms
Another method to make your Google searches more particular is the use of the “~” symbol between words. Using that particular symbol will help you in finding the websites on the particular subject you want.
Suppose you want to search for nice and healthy food, you can use the term “healthy ~food” in the search bar.
3. How to search within websites
When you are reading some kind of an article in a particular website, you can come across an interesting article which you might want to share with others. In order to find that particular article easily, you can search it within the website. All you need to do is to go to the website and type a keyword of that article.
4. The power of the asterisk
Sometimes we fail to recall some part of a keyword or the phrase we need to search. In such cases you have a very powerful symbol – “*”. Place the “*” symbol in place of the word or part of the word in the search bar and you’ll be able to find the desired result.
5. When you miss out on a lot of words
If you forget things more often and you cannot remember more than a single keyword, you don’t need to worry anymore. You should try to write down the first and the last word and write “AROUND + (the approximate number of missing words)“ in between.
6. How to use a time frame
There are also times when we need information about events which took place in a certain period of time. However, you don’t remember the exact time or the year of the event. In such cases you can add a time frame in your search query. You can separate the two dates of the time frame by three dots.
7. How to search for a title or URL
If you need to find the keywords and a particular article, you can simply add “intitle:“ with no space between them. On the other hand, if you need to find the keywords from and URL you can type ”inurl:”.
8. How to find similar websites
If you want to find some similar websites of a particular topic you already know, you can type “related:” followed by the address of the site. This should solve a lot of your problems for sure.
9. Whole phrases
The best and effective way to find something is by inserting whole phrases. You can add quotation marks at the start and end of the phrase to get best results.
When you use quotation marks in the phrase, results where the words of the phrase appear in perfect order as you typed them. On the other hand if you don’t use the quotation marks the search engine will provide you with results where the words are not in the perfect order.
10. Unimportant search words
When you want to search for a particular result, but want to keep away from some search words, you can use the minus symbol. You can see an example in the image below.
