10 Videogame Characters You Never Knew Were GAY

Recently, Blizzard casually released a comic that confirmed that Tracer, the popular Overwatch character, is dating a woman. A lot of gamers were very excited about this, especially those who can relate to it personally, along with anyone else who wants to see more diversity in gaming.

Inspired by Tracer, we’re seen a lot of people asking which other characters in video games are gay, and so we’ve put together this list of ten.

10. Birdo from Super Mario Bros. 2

Birdo just might be the first trans videogame character ever. Before she was playing Tennis with your favorite Mario characters in Mario Tennis, she was spitting eggs at them. In the Japanese version of the game, this character is actually referred to as “Catherine”, however a snippet from the instruction booklet reveals that Birdo “thinks he is a girl and spits eggs from his mouth. He would rather be called ‘Birdetta.’” We respect that, so Birdetta it is.

9. Ash from Streets of Rage 3

The first boss of Streets of Rage 3 was removed from the American release of the game, however he was still accessible through the use of a cheat code. Ash is fabulous in his pink biker gear with studded leather wrist cuffs. You’ll notice that certain characters on this list are more of a caricature, whereas with others you’d have absolutely no idea what their orientation was if it wasn’t mentioned.

8. Bernie Crane from Grand Theft Auto IV

One of only three survivors from Niko’s former 15-man crew, Bernie Crane is also known as Florian Cravic, or “Flowery Florian”. He has dated the Deputy Mayor of Liberty City, Bryce Dawkins, unbeknownst to the Deputy Mayor’s wife or kids. After changing his name to Bernie, he shunned his old self, as he felt he could finally be himself outside of the closet in his new life in Liberty City, until his past managed to catch up.

7. Chitsa from Fallout 2

If you chose to make your character a female, you’d find yourself taking part in a lesbian wedding in this 1998 RPG that laid the foundation for some of the greatest games of all time.

6. Reaver from Fable

Reaver is an industrial tycoon voiced by Stephen Fry, known for using Monty Python quotes, so we can look the other way when it comes to his tyranny. He loves to flirt with other male characters in the game, and has been alive for hundreds of years so he’s definitely seen it all by now.

5. Steve Cortez from Mass Effect 3

gay-videogame-characterHere’s an example of Bioware doing a great job with their characters, as they always do. Steve doesn’t fall into any over the top stereotype of what it means to be a gay man (Not that there’s anything wrong with that, either, everyone should fly their own flag in whatever way makes them happy.) But it’s good to have portrayals of gay men that are more realistic to the world we live in, too, just going about their business like everyone else. Steve shows that there can be a gay character in the game without “gay” being their only trait, it’s just something that he happens to be.

4. Dorian Pavus from Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dorian has a great sense of humor, which he may have developed as a coping mechanism due to his difficult family life and upbringing. He left behind his royal connections when they tried to get him to change who he was, which unfortunately is a story that all too many people can relate to (Except for, maybe, the royalty part…)

3. Vamp from Metal Gear Solid 2 + 4

Vamp is a bi-sexual character from the Metal Gear Solid series, it’s right out there in the open but it’s not a big deal at all. His family died in a church fire, and he was punctured by a crucifix and left for dead in the rubble for two days. During dialobua in MGS2, Snake says that Vamp didn’t get his nickname because he’s a vampire, but rather because he’s bisexual. We’re not really sure what that means, and there are forum threads out there trying to figure it out. It could be lost in translation.

2. Tony Prince from GTA: The Ballad of Gay Tony

Once you saw Bernie on this list, you probabally knew that Tony would be here too. Tony made a few small appearances before earning his own expansion pack. He’s a successful entrepreneur and very resilient..

The Russian mob want me dead, my best friend just contemplated murdering me, the mob are on my case, I’m massively in debt and I just lost 2 million dollars worth of diamonds. Any other man would just dust himself off and carry on.“— Gay Tony

1. Bill from The Last of Us

Bill is paranoid, and doesn’t have the easiest relationship with the main characters. He lives in Lincoln, surrounded by traps, living in fear. He has been celebrated by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for being a depiction of a homosexual man that’s just a regular person. Well, as regular as you can be when you’re living life in a zombie-infested world surronded by weapons and traps. The folks behind The Last of Us have done a great job, and interesting characters are a big part of it.
